A 22-year-0ld man is set to appear in court today, charged with the murder of his 16-year-old former girlfriend.

CJ Fowler was murdered in Kamloops in December 2012. She had been visiting friends in the area and had been scheduled to return home to Terrace.

Her body was found in a ravine, and the exact cause of death has never been revealed.

On Friday, police arrested Damian Lawrence Taylor in Kelowna, and he’s now been charged in connection with the death.

At first, Aboriginal leaders were critical of the RCMP’s handling of the investigation, but officers say police from across the province helped gather information that led to Taylor’s arrest.

“Hopefully those who were quick to castigate and criticize the RCMP that we weren’t doing enough, that we did not care, and that we had abandoned the investigation to find CJ’s killer will now avail themselves of the opportunity to follow the truth and the facts of this case through the courts,” says Supt. Brad Mueller, with the Kamloops RCMP.
