Update: Homeless in Abbotsford refuse to leave camp

A group of homeless people living in an Abbotsford park were ordered to dismantle their camp by Saturday afternoon, however some are vowing to stay put.

Late Friday afternoon, a B.C. Supreme Court judge granted an injunction, ordering the wooden fort and the tents inside to be removed by 4:30 p.m.

Since October, a group of homeless people had being living at Jubilee Park until they were ordered to leave by the city.

Instead, they moved their tents to a fortified encampment surrounded by plywood boards in the parking lot.

The homeless people living in the camp are outraged by the injunction and said they are willing to go to jail rather than move.

An ongoing battle between the City of Abbotsford and the squatters has been raging since June, when city workers dumped chicken manure on a camp. The city later apologized for the incident.

Homeless advocates are calling for a real solution to the problem, including improved resources and support from the city.

Despite Saturday’s eviction order, the city says no action will be taken before Tuesday when a judge will hear the entire application.

Officials will be asking for a ban on tents and structures on all city property.
