Senior analyst at Statistics Canada, Hélène Maheux, reported data on Wednesday from the last 2021 census, showing nearly a quarter of the population were or had ever been, a landed immigrant or permanent resident. This data made immigration the main driver of population growth, in part because of the aging population and low fertility rates in the country. According to Maheux, this means immigration now makes up the largest portion of the population since Confederation.
