South African Health Minister Joe Phaala said on Friday that while it was still “early days,” there were promising signs through preliminary data that the Omicron COVID-19 variant was not resulting in more severe cases. He said even patients who are in hospital are seeing mild symptoms, with “many” patients considered “incidental” in that they came to the hospital for other illnesses.
