A mother and her 13-year-old son were caught up in a mudslide Friday afternoon in the small community of Sunnybrae in Tappen.

The two were taken to hospital with what are said to be minor injuries, but both are shaken up according to husband and father Darin Blair.

Blair heard about the slide on social media while visiting family in Nova Scotia.

He called his wife just as she was being loaded into an ambulance.

Blair said his wife and son are lucky to be alive, but the family has lost everything they own.

They were renting the Shuswap house and did not have content insurance.

BC Emergency Management spokesperson Julianne McCaffrey said the cause of the mudslide is unknown.

It destroyed two homes, prompted the evacuation of four others due to unknown stability, and cut off the road to about 30 more homes on Sunnybrae-Canoe Point Road.
