On Sept. 2, 1998, 229 souls boarded Swissair Flight 111 at JFK International Airport in New York for a flight heading to Geneva, Switzerland. The plane would not reach its final destination.

"Nancy thanked me for the stories I'd written," recalls Richard Dooley. She called them "her lifeline."

Many were unable to hold back tears during an emotional service honouring the 229 people who died 20 years ago aboard Swissair Flight 111.
