Jim Lemaigre won Athabasca after the NDP failed to understand the northwest constituency, though neither Ryan Meili nor Scott Moe played a critical role, according to Ken Coates.

The by-election was called after former NDP MLA Buckley Belanger stepped down to run for the Liberal Party in the 2021 federal election.
