Distance and geography have been cited as the primary reasons Canadian medical helicopters remained on the ground in northern Mali during two bloody attacks on UN peacekeepers last fall.

A car-bomb explosion in northern Mali killed three civilians on Monday, and one group reportedly claimed that Canadian soldiers and other foreign forces were targeted.

The onboard medical team includes a doctor, nurse and two medics. Even the two heavily-armed military escorts have advanced medical training.
