The shooting happened on Sherwood Avenue, near Pharmacy Avenue, at around 2:50 a.m.

SIU spokesperson Kristy Denette told reporters that Toronto police officers initially received a call about a man in distress who was believed to have a knife.

“Officers arrived and there was an interaction,” Denette said. “A conductive energy weapon was discharged and an officer shot the man four times. The man was struck I believe three times.”

Paramedics told Global News they took a man in serious to life-threatening condition to a trauma centre.

Denette said the man is undergoing surgery. She also said the interaction happened in the basement of a home.

The SIU is an independent agency that investigates the conduct of officers in incidents that have resulted in death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault.
