Peel Regional Police said on July 20 at around 12:15 p.m., officers were called to an apartment building at 28 Helene St. N. for a well-being check for a female resident.

Investigators said Pitch Phaunpa was located deceased. According to police, she is believed to have died between July 17 and 18 and her death is being investigated as a homicide.

Her father, who flew to the Greater Toronto Area from Moncton, N.B., said he asked the police to check on his daughter, who the family called Polly, last week.

“I worried about her since day one… I check her location every day, every hour. I worry about her,” Jack Phaunpa told Global News. “The last time I talked to her, I said, ‘I miss you very much.'”

He said when he got off the plane, officers from Peel police met him.

The woman’s family said they were worried about her because she suffered from PTSD and depression and had walked into a hospital and was admitted this year.

Her family also told Global News she may have found a roommate, something they were concerned about.

“My assumption is she made a good connection with this person at the hospital and out of the goodness of her heart, he didn’t have a place to stay so she wanted to help him out,” Peter, her brother, explained.

Jack said he had just convinced his daughter to move to New Brunswick to be with the family before she died. She was planning to move home at the end of August, he said.

The family last saw her on Canada Day when she went home to visit.

Pete said his sister loved to draw. He said she was in the process of figuring out her education plans.

Homicide detectives are leading the investigation.
