TORONTO — The son of Oscar-winning actor Daniel Day-Lewis has released a rap video in which he opens up about drug use and being compared to his famous father.

Gabriel-Kane Day-Lewis posted the video for “Green Aura” on YouTube this week.

Sporting a backwards baseball cap and an Africa-shaped necklace, the 18-year-old raps:

“Call me Gabe Day / And not Gabe Day-Lewis / ‘Cuz if you’re trying to call me out / I’m ’bout to Gabe Day lose it / B**** I know what my name is / and s*** I know what fame is / Judgin’ someone for their dad is just as bad as being racist / ‘Cuz I remain my own person.”

He goes on: “To those who think they know me / ‘cuz they know my dad / He’s in film right / so my life has been more exposed than yours has.”

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

The video was shot on the campus of Sarah Lawrence College in Bronxville, New York, where the teen is enrolled.

Day-Lewis confesses to battling drug problems and explains the “X” tattoo on his hand is to “keep me from temptation and reaching for things I know are bad.”

He raps: “I was on a bad path / I did too many drugs / Felt like coping on my own / when what I needed was a hug / I had a bad trip / re-evaluated my life / Thank God I survived / now it’s easier to smile.”

In the expletive-filled rap, he recalls the death of his uncle. “That’s when I understood that heroin addiction is a sickness.”

Day-Lewis says he felt grief for his mother, French actress Isabelle Adjani, “who has no one left in her life but me and my older brother.”

Adjani and Daniel Day-Lewis ended their six-year relationship shortly before Gabriel was born.

Not everyone is feeling sympathy for the aspiring rapper.

“People who have to work for everything they have cannot identify with this,” reads one comment on YouTube. “SLC is one of the the most expensive colleges in the U.S. and claiming all you have is the music is ridiculous. Also stating that judging someone because of who their father is is just as bad as racism is very incorrect.”

Another person came to Day-Lewis’ defence. “Let the kid rap! He’s not talkin about pimpin women, cookin crack, or murderin people for fun. Yes he’s privileged, but he’s expressing himself in a positive manor. He’s just doin what he wants to do, and I’m fine with that.”
