A police officer and a male suspect were both injured during a crash and a shooting at the North Cowichan Duncan detachment on Friday morning.
RCMP say an officer was doing a vehicle check in the parking lot when a man drove into the employee lot and struck the police vehicle, injuring the officer.
Police said a second officer then fired his gun at the vehicle, hitting the driver. Video taken of the incident from a bystander shows the suspect was out of the vehicle at the time.
Both the driver and the officer were taken to the hospital with what are believed to be non-life-threatening injuries.
“This is a very disturbing incident for our members and employees,” said Insp. Chris Bear, officer in charge of the detachment.
“Additional supports and resources have been brought in to our detachment and core policing operations for the community will not be impacted.
“We are unsure what the man’s intentions were at this time, but the investigation will look to determine that.”
The Independent Investigations Office of B.C. confirms it has been contacted about an incident in Duncan on Friday morning.
The office investigates police-involved incidents of death or serious harm involving police.
In March, the investigations team was also deployed to Duncan after officers shot a man who allegedly crashed into police vehicles with a piece of industrial equipment.
The Independent Investigations Office confirmed it was reviewing the case, including reports “that there was contact between the loader and police vehicles.
More to come.
