Mounties in Prince George make a significant weapons seizure

A Prince George man is facing a litany of charges in connection with one of the largest firearms and ammunition seizures in northern B.C.

A package from Germany containing assault rifle parts was intercepted by border officials on September 9 and when RCMP followed up by searching a home, they found a huge collection of firearms and other weapons.

The haul was convincing. Mounties seized more than 31,000 rounds of ammunition, three hand guns, two of which were loaded, seven rifles, a fully automatic M16, a fully automatic AK 47, two morning stars, two shot guns, five 100 round capacity drum magazines, 50 assault rifle magazines and four bullet proof vests.

Fifty-three-year-old Karl Haus is facing 17 charges, including possession and importing of prohibited weapons and ammunition.

“We have nothing to indicate that it is connected to anything at this point,” says RCMP Superintendent Derek Simmonds. “We need to continue our work to find out where these weapons originated from beyond Germany and to determine whether there are any other connections.”

Police believe these weapons were destined for the criminal world.

Last summer police agencies held a one-month long gun amnesty program, collecting 1,800 firearms.

A similar program in 2006 collected 3,200 weapons.
