Police say the incident happened on the 2000 block of Briar Crescent NW in the Hounsfield Heights/Briar Hill neighbourhood.

The homeowner found the two suspects in the basement and confronted them only to be attacked with a weapon, police said. The homeowner fought back and the suspects left with stolen property, including keys to the family’s vehicle, in which she took off. Police believe the male fled on foot.

Authorities received a call that one of the suspects was armed with a machete, however police have not been able to confirm this.

The home owner received a minor injury during the break in.

Police were able to find the stolen vehicle, which “had collided with a fence,” a news release Sunday afternoon reads.
