Kingston Police are investigating a shooting near Collins Bay penitentiary – Mar 24, 2023

One man is in hospital with serious, life-threatening injuries as Kingston Police are investigating a shooting in the area of Bath Road and Centennial Drive on Friday.

According to Frontenac Paramedic Services, two crews responded to the scene. One male patient, in their early 30s, was transported to Kingston Health Sciences Centre with serious life-threatening injuries from multiple gunshot wounds. Paramedics say they are in critical condition.

Police say this was a targeted attack.

According to police, the suspect’s vehicle is described as a grey Honda Civic and occupied by several armed black males last seen fleeing from the scene travelling northbound on Centennial Dr from Bath Rd.

If seen, we are advising the public to not approach this vehicle and immediately contact 911.

Bath Road between Queen Mary Road and Tanner Drive will continue to remain closed to motorists as police investigate this incident.

Eye-witness, George Shorey described the incident to a Global Kingston reporter.

“I pulled up to the intersection and I heard shots,” he said. “I saw one person aiming a handgun at a vehicle, and another shooting. I saw these puffs off the ground.”

“When I realized it was real shots, I said let’s get out of here.”

Correctional Services Canada has announced that the minimum, medium, and maximum-security levels at Collins Bay Institution and the Henry Traill Community Correctional Centre are closed to the public until further notice.

CSC says the closure was ordered to ensure the safety and security of the institution, its staff, and inmates.

It adds visits have been suspended while the incident is ongoing.

“Normal operations will resume as soon as it is considered safe to do so. We ask the public to avoid the area at this time,” CSC said in a news release.
