EDMONTON – For nine years, Boonstock was held in Sturgeon County, Alberta, but after the County voted to ban the music festival, it has found a new home in Penticton, B.C. for 2014.
In just six years, Boonstock attendance grew from roughly 1,500 people a day to 14,000, which nearby residents said led to traffic problems, noise, and crime around the site near Gibbons, Alberta.
In September, after receiving a petition with a 107 names, Sturgeon County Council agreed to force the festival to move.
Organizers say the largest music festival of its kind in Western Canada will now be one of the largest beach parties in Canada.
“For our tenth anniversary, we thought we might have a beach party,” explained Boonstock founder and President Colin Kobza. “And Penticton and the South Okanagan are a perfect location.”
