Police said officers were called to the Ocean Centre Mall just after 8:30 a.m. for a report that shots had been fired.

Some members who were already in the area responded immediately and quickly determined it was not an active shooter situation but rather an isolated incident between two people, said police.

The suspect is believed to have shot the victim before attempting to take his own life, police added. The man was rushed to the hospital but died of his injuries on Monday evening.

The two people knew each other.

“It is still in the early stage of the investigation and therefore, limited details can be released at this time,” Const. Gabriel Gravel, media relations officer with the Prince Rupert RCMP, said in a release.
