Pedestrian struck by vehicle, seriously injured in northwest Calgary

A pedestrian was sent to hospital Tuesday evening after being struck by a vehicle in northwest Calgary.

Calgary police said the pedestrian was struck by a minivan in the area of 16 Avenue NW and 12 Street NW at around 8:15 p.m.

Police said a 53-year-old man was walking south across 16 Avenue in a crosswalk when he was hit by a Toyota Sienna.

The man was taken to hospital with serious, life-threatening injuries, according to police. Officers said Wednesday morning that his condition has since been upgraded to stable.

Officers said the 39-year-old man who was driving the van stayed at the scene. He was not injured, police said.

Speed and alcohol are not considered to be factors, the Calgary Police Service said in a news release Wednesday morning.

The intersection was closed by police Tuesday night while officers conducted the investigation. The intersection has since reopened.
