A Remembrance Day ceremony took place at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 11 at the Kingsway Legion at 14339 50 Street NE in Edmonton.
“On the eleventh hour of the eleventh day on the eleventh month… we stand in humility, but we stand in honour, as we remember those who died, those who were wounded, those who served and who continue to serve today.
“Thank you and we salute you and your bravery,” the legion’s MC and RCMP veteran Padre Bob Wiebe said.
“We cannot say thank you enough.
“We are free because men and women who have gone before and men and women like yourselves unselfishly gave their lives and sacrifice.
“The freedom that we enjoy is not really free,” Wiebe added.
Friday’s ceremony included the national anthem and Last Post, two minutes of silence, followed by the Lament and the Rouse.
There were also several readings, blessings and laying of wreaths.
Wreaths were laid by dignitaries including representatives from the federal government, province, and city such as UCP MLA and deputy premier Kaycee Madu, NDP MLA Heather Sweet, and city manager and veteran Andre Corbould.
Representatives from the Canadian Armed Forces, Royal Canadian Legion, 408 helicopter squadron, RCMP K Division and Corrections Services Canada also laid wreaths.
For the last couple of years, the Kingsway Legion has hosted Remembrance Day ceremonies in Edmonton in the absence of the larger event at the University of Alberta Butterdome.
