SIU investigate London, Ont. crash that seriously injured 2

Ontario’s police watchdog has invoked its mandate after two people sustained serious injuries in a collision Monday morning involving London, Ont., police.

Police said the collision occurred shortly before 5 a.m. in the area of Pond Mills and Commissioners roads involving an alleged stolen vehicle.

In an update Tuesday, the Special Investigations Unit which is probing the incident, said that officers had been investigating a break and enter when they observed a suspicious van which fled.

Police deployed spike belts, which the driver ran over, causing them to travel through the intersection of Pond Mills and Commissioners roads and collide with another vehicle, an agency release reads.

The male driver of the civilian vehicle was seriously hurt and taken to the hospital, while the male driver of the van fled on foot. He remained at large as of early Monday.

The SIU said a female passenger was located inside the van. Police said on Monday that an occupant of the van was taken to hospital with serious non-life threatening injuries.

A stretch of Commissioners Road from Frontenac Road to Deveron Crescent was closed for the investigation.

The SIU says it has assigned three investigators and two forensic investigators to the case.

One subject official and four witness officials have been designated, they said.
