A standoff between police and a man barricaded in a northwest Woodstock, Ont. apartment ended with an arrest on Wednesday after 19 hours, police officials said.
The incident began around 9 p.m. Tuesday when police say officers responded to an incident in the area of Devonshire and Vansittart avenues involving a man who had barricaded himself inside of an apartment with a suspected weapon.
Police closed off the area, and blocked traffic through several nearby intersections as members of Woodstock police, with assistance from Waterloo Regional Police and the OPP, monitored the scene and negotiated with the suspect, police said.
Officials provided few details about the ongoing incident.
In an update issued late Wednesday afternoon, Woodstock police announced that officers had taken a 40-year-old Woodstock resident into custody around 3:15 p.m.
The accused, whose identity has not been released, faces a charge of weapons dangerous, assault with a weapon, and mischief, police said.
“At this time the investigation is ongoing, roads have been reopened, the area cleared and there is no threat to public safety,” police said in a statement.
“The Woodstock Police Service would like to thank the public for their cooperation during this investigation.”
