1 dead after wheel collides with vehicles on the QEW in Oakville

A 77-year-old man is dead after a wheel flew off a trailer and struck several cars while driving on the QEW in Oakville Tuesday afternoon, according to OPP.

In a social media post just after 1 p.m., Sgt. Kerry Schmidt said the wheel came off a westbound vehicle and struck three others travelling eastbound near Winston Chruchill Boulevard.

“OPP are currently on scene along with fire, paramedics, and the MTO,” Schmidt said.

“We have a full highway closure of the QEW Toronto bound at Ford drive. All traffic is being forced off. The westbound QEW remains open at this time.”

Schmidt says the dead driver was from Oakville and in the first car hit by the tire, believed to have come off of an empty boat trailer being hauled by a truck.

The QEW closure extended between Ford Drive and Trafalgar Road due to evidence believed to be relevant to the ongoing investigation.

The roadway reopened just after 4 p.m.

A collision reconstruction team have also recovered the trailer as part of their ongoing probe.
