Major traffic delays after truck hauling heavy equipment strikes Highway 1 overpass in Surrey

It's happening with a frightening amount of frequency: another Metro Vancouver overpass has taken a beating from an overheight load on a truck, inconveniencing thousands of commuters. As Kamil Karamali reports, this latest crash is the third like it in a little more than a month. – Jul 12, 2022

A dump truck hauling a flatbed trailer with an excavator struck the westbound side of the 192nd Street overpass on Highway 1 in Surrey around 8 a.m., during the morning commute.

The equipment believed to be an excavator was being pulled by the truck with its bucket not completely collapsed when it hit the overpass.

The overpass now has a big crack in it and the piece of equipment crashed onto the highway.

Two SUVs were also caught up in the mess. One was badly smashed up after debris may have flown through the sunroof, leaving a woman with a cut on her head.

Another SUV also suffered some damage.

B.C. Emergency Health Services said they were called at 8:08 a.m. and responded with two ground ambulances.

Crews confirmed they transported two patients to the hospital but could not provide further details.

A similar incident on the 232nd Street overpass at the end of June is estimated to come with a one million dollar repair bill.

At the beginning of June in Richmond, the Cambie Road overpass was also struck and the road was closed for hours.

Traffic is still able to travel on the overpass at this time.

Westbound traffic is still reduced to a single lane and it is not known when the road will fully reopen.
