The 59-year-old was found at the scene suffering from what appeared to be gunshot wounds, and transported to the hospital “conscious and breathing” shortly after 11:20 a.m., said Burnaby RCMP Cpl. Mike Kalanj.

It appears the shooting happened in the area where the victim was found and police remain on the scene, he added. The victim is known to police, but in an interview, Kalanj declined to reveal what for.

“At this time we believe the incident is targeted, so we don’t believe there is an ongoing public safety issue,” he told Global News. “We’re not going to go into too many details about the victim.”

Footage of the scene shot by Global News shows several RCMP vehicles parked within a roped-off area at Patterson Avenue and Hurst Street, and Willingdon Avenue and Hurst Street.

One civilian vehicle was draped in a yellow tarp and surrounded by cones.

“It’s unclear whether (the victim) was in the vehicle or outside the vehicle, or if the vehicle is actually related,” Kalanj said of the shooting. “It did occur on the street.”
