Bus drivers refuse to pick up Little Flower Academy students

VANCOUVER – The Coast Mountain Bus Company has apologized to Little Flower Academy after some of its drivers refused to pick up students from the Vancouver private school for girls.

Derek Zabel of Coast Mountain said company officials have met with the principal and offered their regrets about the drivers’ actions.

"I want to issue an apology to the students and the parents and the teachers," said Zabel. "I hope this doesn’t continue."

Zabel said he wasn’t sure whether the drivers’ actions were related to the case of Lisa Reimer, a teacher who made the news two weeks ago when a dispute arose as to whether school administrators had let her go because she was a lesbian.

"I don’t know if this is a political statement," said Zabel. "We’re definitely investigating."

Principal Marcelle De Freitas wasn’t available for an interview Tuesday, but the school released a statement about the issue.

"We have several reports of buses not stopping for students, and one specific instance where they were told to get off the bus," read the school statement.

"The well-being of our students is paramount and, of course, the school has contacted TransLink.

"TransLink have responded by meeting with us, and, we understand, are looking into the matter."

Zabel said he doesn’t expect any further incidents with students at the school.
