Okanagan construction shows recovery

Good evidence new home construction in the valley continues to recover from the recession slowdown.

The month of April proved to be strong through out the Okanagan, according to the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC), who’ve released their April report.

Single family house construction in Kelowna rose from 29 units in April 2009 to 56 in April 2010, a jump of 93%.

While there were no multiple housing units begun in Kelowna during the month of April last year, 21 units began construction this April.

Since January, 178 single family homes and 148 multiple housing units have begun in Kelowna alone.

Construction of homes in Penticton is also up by 400%, mostly in multiple units.

Vernon also saw its share of new home construction as starts on single family homes increased 58%, going from 12 in April 2009 to 19 in April 2010.

Vernon saw an increase of over 191% for new detached home construction, but saw multi-family unit construction decrease by 84%.
