Police say there are no injuries after a pilot crash-landed beside a highway north of Toronto.
In a tweet, Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) said its Aurora detachment was “at the scene of a plane crash” near Buttonville Airport in Markham.
Police said the aircraft, inbound for landing, crash-landed around Highway 404 and 16th Avenue. The intersection was closed Wednesday evening as the OPP and York Regional Police responded to the incident.
The aircraft’s lone pilot was not injured, according to OPP.
York Regional Police warned the public traffic would be delayed.
In a statement emailed to Global News on Thursday, a spokesperson for the Transportation Safety Board of Canada, said the aircraft was on “final approach to runway 15 at Buttonville” when it “collided with a light post and was found in a grassy area by Highway 404 near Runway 15, off of airport property.”
TSB confirmed the pilot was not injured, but said the aircraft was “substantially damaged.”
“TSB investigators were deployed to the occurrence site late last night. The aircraft was recovered and moved to a secure location,” the statement reads. “Our investigators will continue to gather information and assess the occurrence to determine next steps in accordance with the TSB Policy on occurrence classification.”
