1 arrested after stolen vehicle flees from Peterborough police responding to business alarm call

Peterborough police have made an arrest after a pursuit of a vehicle was called off early Friday for safety reasons.

Around 1 a.m., Peterborough Police Service officers responded to an alarm call at a business in the area of Rink and Rubidge streets. Police say when officers arrived, they saw someone getting into a vehicle and fleeing the parking lot.

“Officers followed the vehicle but after a short distance called off the pursuit for safety reasons,” police stated.

Investigators returned to the business and discovered a door had been smashed and determined the vehicle involved in the pursuit had been stolen.

No details were provided on the vehicle’s description.

UPDATE 3 p.m.

Police say around 11 a.m. officers located the suspect vehicle on Sherbrooke Street West between Brealey Drive and Highway 7. Officers conducted a traffic stop and were able to take the driver into custody. During the arrest, officers determined the driver was impaired.

A 39-year-old Peterborough man was arrested and charged with break and enter a place – commit indictable offence, flight from a peace officer, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, mischief under $5,000, theft under $5,000, theft over $5,000 of a motor vehicle, possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000, impaired driving (alcohol and drugs), refusal to provide a breath sample, resisting a peace officer, possession of a schedule I substance (cocaine), careless driving, driving a motor vehicle without a licence, driving a motor vehicle without licence plates, operating an unsafe vehicle and littering a highway.

The accused was held in custody and will appear in court on Saturday.
