EDMONTON – An Edmonton man who fatally injured a senior in a brutal 2011 attack has been sentenced to life in prison.
During the early morning hours of May 8th, 2011, Marvin Witzaney broke into a seniors care home at 95 Street and 102 A Avenue and sexually assaulted an 84-year-old woman who was asleep in her bed.
The victim suffered severe injuries to her head and body. She died in hospital eight days after the attack.
Within 18 hours of the brutal attack, Witzaney was in custody.
The 47-year-old pleaded guilty to five charges, including manslaughter and sexual assault causing bodily harm.
In the Agreed Statement of Facts, there was no answer as to why Witzaney committed the crime.
“I have no memory of the event,” said Witzaney at the sentencing on Wednesday. “That doesn’t mean I don’t regret what’s happened…I want help your Honour. I need help.”
The Crown and the Defence offered a joint submission for a life sentence.
On Wednesday afternoon, Justice Macklin sentenced Witzaney to life imprisonment. He will not be eligible for parole for 10 years.
