Two trains crashed Thursday morning on the Kingston line. Although no Via Rail trains were involved in the crash, a bulletin on its site says to expect “significant delays” between Montreal and Toronto due to the incident.

OPP said one person suffered minor injuries during the wreck. CN confirmed that a crew member was sent to hospital as a precautionary measure but is in stable condition.

The cause of the crash is still under investigation, CN says.

CN says in total, four locomotives have derailed, two of which are on their side, with approximately 16 cars off the tracks in various positions. One of the locomotives is reported to have a minor fuel leak, which CN says is being addressed.

“No fires or dangerous goods have been reported,” CN said in a statement.

Via Rail was forced to ship passengers already en route on one train to their destination by bus, while other trains are being rerouted through Ottawa until the tracks are cleared and safe for travel.

The delays are expected to last until Friday.

“Impacted passengers are being contacted to offer updates and alternative travel options when possible,” Via Rail said in a statement.

The collision took place near Edward Street in the town of Prescott, according to OPP. Police closed the overpass at Edward Street that connects to Highway 401 for a short period but the road has since been reopened.

The crossing at Boundary Street in Prescott is temporarily closed, but CN says its crews are working with local first responders to resolve the issue.

The Transportation Safety Board has sent a team of investigators to assess the incident.
