A police investigation is underway after gunshots were reported outside the McGill University Health Centre (MUHC) hospital on Décarie Boulevard in Montreal early Tuesday morning.
At a press conference held outside Montreal police headquarters on Tuesday evening, spokesperson David Shane confirmed two officers were shot at.
He couldn’t however say at this stage of the investigation, whether they were targeted.
It happened at around 2 a.m. on when officers in the area reported hearing gunshots.
Shane said a projectile was found at the scene later in the day.
He also said one officer was injured during the incident on the grounds outside the hospital but was unable to confirm whether the officer had been grazed by a bullet. According to police, it was a minor injury and the officer is expected to recover.
However, the incident has left many on the force shaken.
“We are giving them all the support necessary,” Shane said.
The shooting also prompted a temporary lockdown on several floors of the hospital following reports from those inside the building of a possible suspect. In a statement, the MUHC said the emergency code was lifted around 4:30 a.m.
After a sweep of those floors found no signs of disturbance, police turned their attention to the hospital grounds, where a command post was put in place.
No arrests have been made and police have no suspects. With little information to go on, police are asking anyone who noticed suspicious people or behaviour in the area around the hospital in the city’s southwest around 1:30 a.m. to contact them.
Shane reiterated Tuesday evening that police require the public’s assistance.
Police say major crimes investigators and a canine unit are helping with the investigation.
The MUHC said the area at the back of the hospital will “remain closed until further notice” as the investigation continues.
Anyone who is heading to the Glen site should note there could be delays and the hospital is asking people to use public transit “as much as possible” to access the site.
