Just after 6 p.m. on Friday, police responded to a call of a disturbance at a student apartment at Jubilee and Edward.

Halifax police watch commander Bill Morris says that when officers responded they said that a man had run into the student apartment then a fire broke out.

Morris says the man, who is in his 20s, fled but officers caught up with him not too far from the scene.

“We have a male in custody as a result of the police response to the building,” he said.

Police requested assistance from firefighters, who responded with six engines.

Division Commander Peter Andrews says that when firefighters got on scene, they found a fire in a bedroom on the fourth floor that had moved into adjacent rooms.

“The fire had taken hold on the fourth floor and had actually flashed over the bedroom area and extended down the hall to an additional bedroom area and living room area,” Andrews said.

“We had multiple rooms fully involved as our crew advanced.”

Andrews says the fire is under investigation and is suspicious in nature.

He adds that firefighters found one person on the first floor of the house, who he said had not even been aware of the fire.

There is no word yet on how the fire started.

Andrews says damage is not too extensive and residents should be able to return to the house by the end of Friday.
