Two people were sent to hospital from a church in southwest Calgary with stab wounds Friday afternoon.
According to police, officers were called to the New Victory Church on West Valley Road S.W. at about 12:40 p.m. “for reports of a man in (a) building stabbing people.”
“A daycare in the building was locked down and officers were able to take the man into custody,” police said.
According to EMS, a man in his 20s was taken to hospital in serious but stable condition, and a man in his 60s was taken to hospital in stable condition.
The church complex contains homes, offices, a church and a daycare, and police said the stabbings happened in the residence portion.
“Officers are trained on how to work together in buildings where there is an active threat to ensure that any threat to people is stopped as soon as possible,” police said.
“The first officers into the building are tasked only with finding and stopping the threat, followed by a second wave of officers who help EMS and firefighters evacuate and treat anyone who has been injured.”
Charges are pending against the man, police said, so he can’t be named. The motivation behind the attack is still under investigation.
