11-year-old boy dead after being struck by vehicle in Markham, OPP say

An 11-year-old boy has died after being struck by a vehicle while riding a bicycle in Markham Thursday afternoon, Ontario Provincial Police say.

Emergency services responded to a call about a boy who was struck on Warden Avenue near Highway 407 just after 4 p.m.

OPP Sgt. Kerry Schmidt said the child was crossing the Highway 407 on-ramp from the northbound lanes of Warden Avenue when he was hit.

In an update released late Thursday, police said he died in a hospital.

“Our deepest condolence and thoughts are with his family and friends,” an OPP tweet said.

Schmidt said the driver remained at the scene of the collision and cooperated with officers.

Meanwhile, anyone with information was asked to contact police.
