Liberal candidate Marie-Claude Bibeau is the projected winner in the riding of Compton–Stanstead.
The riding shares a border with the U.S. states of Maine and New Hampshire. It covers the municipality of Sherbrooke, and the towns of Coaticook, Lennoxville, North Hatley, Stanstead, and Ayer’s Cliff.
This riding was formed from Mégantic—Compton—Stanstead and Richmond—Wolfe in 1997.
Nearly 87 per cent of residents in the riding identify French as their mother tongue, according to the 2016 census.
The Parc de la Gorge de Coaticook, which was once considered the world’s longest suspended footbridge, is located in this riding.
Incumbent Liberal MP Marie-Claude Bibeau was able to recapture the riding in the 2019 election. She beat Bloc Québécois candidate David Benoit, winning by 3,160 votes.
Bibeau previously served as the Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food and the Minister of International Development and La Francophonie in Justin Trudeau’s cabinet.
