Burnaby RCMP said it happened around 4:10 a.m. Sunday morning, near Dubois Street and Boundary Road.

Officers arrived to find the victim with multiple gunshot wounds, which were initially believed to be life-threatening.

“We’re happy to announce we no longer believe those to be life-threatening injuries. She’s still in hospital, she’s recovering, she’s in stable condition and cooperating with the police investigation,” Cpl. Brett Cunningham said.

Cunningham said police identified a suspect around 7:30 a.m., and arrested a 43-year-old man at another residence.

Varinder Singh Deo has now been charged with one count of aggravated assault and has been remanded to May 4 at 9:30 a.m. in Vancouver Provincial Court for a bail hearing, police confirmed.

Neither the victim nor the suspect were “particularly known to police,” Cunningham said.

“It’s really unclear as to the shooter’s relationship with the victim,” he said.

“We’re still trying to determine what took place. What I can tell you is at this time we do not believe this to be involved with the Lower Mainland gang conflict, and we do not believe there to be any drug trade or drug transactions in this situation.”

Officers were in the area Sunday morning canvassing for witnesses and collecting evidence.

It came less than 12 hours after a brazen daylight shooting in a busy public area on the Delta-Surrey border left a man dead.
