Police say a man in his 40s was shot and killed at the Langley Sportsplex on 91A Avenue just after 9 a.m. Wednesday.

The Langley Sportsplex contains ice rinks, daycares and a gym and would have been open at the time of the shooting.

“There were a number of people here, families,” Integrated Homicide Investigation Team Sgt. Frank Jang said.

“The Sportsplex … is a skating rink, there’s a children’s playground inside. There were a number of young people, parents, going about their daily business when this happened.”

Jang said police were not releasing the victim’s name pending notification of next of kin, but believe they know who he is.

“He was very well known to police, and we believe his death was targeted,” Jang said, adding that if the victim is who they think he is, he was linked to gang activity.

Police have linked a Grey Dodge pickup truck, which was later found torched in the 1200 block of Riverside Drive in Port Coquitlam, to the shooting.

Police are looking for any dashcam video that was shot at the Sportsplex as early as 8:30 a.m., or on the route between Langley and Port Coquitlam, including the Golden Ears Bridge or Lougheed Highway.

“If you have dashcam video … it’s very likely you may have in your vehicle on a memory stick right now the very suspect vehicle we are looking for,” he said.

“Depending on how good that video is, you may very well have the footage of the shooter and perhaps those who are aiding and abetting them.”

This shooting comes just days after a pair of brazen shootings in busy public locations.

On Monday, investigators said 20-year-old Bailey McKinney was shot dead near the skate park at Coquitlam’s Town Centre Park. The suspect in this case has not been found at this time.

And on Saturday, a man was shot dead in front of a restaurant in Vancouver’s Coal Harbour.

Jang said police are looking into possible connections in the shootings.
