Two pilots unhurt after helicopter crashes on Bowen Island

Witnesses to a helicopter crash on Bowen Island Friday were shocked to find both pilots had managed to walk away from the wreckage of what they describe as a horrendous crash. John Hua reports. – Mar 5, 2021

An air ambulance was dispatched to Bowen Island after a helicopter crashed in the trees Friday.

Airspan Helicopters confirmed two pilots were on board and both walked away from the accident site.

They were taken to the hospital as a precaution, the company confirmed.

There were no passengers on board at the time.

B.C. Emergency Health Services said they received a call at 9:51 a.m. Friday.

Ground paramedics were sent to the scene and then an air ambulance was called.

Search-and-rescue crews were also involved in the extraction, BCEHS confirmed.

There are no details on where the helicopter departed from or its intended destination.

Airspan said it is working with the Transportation Safety Board to conduct an investigation into what happened.

The TSB said Friday evening that it was deploying investigators to the crash site.

Bowen Island has a population of about 4,000 people and can be reached by a 20-minute ferry ride from Horseshoe Bay.
