Durham Regional Police say two children were injured after an incident involving a construction machine used to clear snow at an elementary school in Whitby late Tuesday morning.
Emergency services were called to Julie Payette Public School on Garden Street at around 10:30 a.m.
A Whitby Fire spokesperson told Global News two young children were sitting next to a fence when a private snowplow operator drove into the fence, which fell over onto the kids.
Paramedics said they transported a boy, around 12 years old, to hospital with serious injuries.
Police said, the other child, a girl around the same age, suffered minor injuries and was treated on scene.
The parents of the children have been notified, police said.
The Ministry of Labour has also been contacted.
“We can confirm there was an accident at Julie Payette PS earlier today involving a snow plow at a property adjacent to the school, resulting in snow impacting the school yard and two children being injured during the morning recess,” read a statement from the school’s communications and public relations department.
“To ensure the safety and well-being of students, students were brought back inside the school and support is being provided to school staff and students who may have been impacted by seeing or hearing about the incident,” the statement continued.
“Our thoughts are with the child in hospital and we are hoping for a quick recovery.”
