Man charged with attempted murder after police officer injured during Montreal traffic stop

A 31-year-old man was charged with attempted murder Friday in connection with an altercation Thursday night, during which a Montreal police officer was injured.

Mamadi III Fara Camara, who appeared in a Montreal court house Friday via video conference, was also charged with disarming a police officer, aggravated assault on a police officer with a prohibited firearm and discharging a prohibited firearm.

Montreal police released little information Friday after the officer was allegedly disarmed and injured following a traffic stop Thursday afternoon.

Police had initially said on Thursday that one of their members had been shot in the upper body, but they walked that back later that night and said investigators still needed to determine what had happened.

They said today the officer’s firearm was taken by the suspect following the traffic stop and said the officer was transported to hospital with a head injury.

A police spokesperson says the nature of the officer’s injuries hasn’t been confirmed and wouldn’t say whether the police-issued firearm had been recovered.

The police officer was conscious on the way to hospital and his injuries are not considered life threatening.

The accused is expected back in court on Monday for a scheduled bail hearing. He will remain detained in the interim.
