Fatal southern Alberta collision on Highway 2 claims the life of 1 man

One man has died and three others were sent to hospital after a collision on Highway 2, at the Granum intersection of Highway 519.

EMS said emergency crews were dispatched just before 9:30 a.m. Thursday.

In an update on Friday, police said the collision happened when a semi truck was travelling west on Highway 519 near Granum. After stopping at the Highway 2 intersection, the semi turned northbound into the merge lane and was hit by a northbound pickup truck.

There were four people in the pickup. The 33-year-old female driver from Lethbridge and a 29-year-old man from the Blood Tribe received non-life-threatening injuries and were both taken to hospital via ground ambulance, police said.

A 27-year-old woman was airlifted by STARS in critical condition, while a 26-year-old man was taken to hospital by ground ambulance. However, police said the man died of his injuries before arriving at the hospital.

Both were also from the Blood Tribe.

The driver of the semi was not injured.

An RCMP collision analyst attended the scene and traffic was rerouted until about 3 p.m.

Police said the investigation into the collision is ongoing and “all possible contributing factors” are being considered.

The name of the man who died will not be released.
