1 dead in police-involved shooting near Niagara-on-the-Lake: SIU

The province’s police watchdog is investigating a police-involved shooting that left one man dead in an area just south of Niagara-on-the-Lake.

The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) says the incident began when Niagara Regional Police (NRPS) responded to a call about two people sleeping in a vehicle near Lundy’s Lane and Corwin Avenue around 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday afternoon.

Upon arrival, the vehicle began to flee and was followed by officers who made several attempts to stop the driver.

Eventually, the vehicle ran into a ditch on the Niagara River Parkway at Line 3.

Investigators say an officer then had an interaction with an occupant who was eventually shot.

The man died in hospital just after 3:30 p.m.

A post-mortem is being scheduled and attempts to identify the man are underway.

The SIU says four investigators and three forensic investigators have been assigned to the case.
