Sonya Salomaa

Sonya Salomaa stars as ambitious engineer and first mate Laura Nelson. Salomaa describes Laura as "very type A, very by the book. It’s very important to her to have rules and stick to them and, because of that, she sometimes comes across as a little uptight."

Salomaa is nominated for a Gemini Award for her performance as Traci Prager on Durham County, also on Global. She won two Leo Awards, in 2005 and 2006, for Best Actress in a Supporting Role, for her performance as Maya in The Collector and was also nominated for an acting award at the Monte Carlo Television Festival in 2006. Salomaa’s television appearances also include series such as Dark Angel, The L Word, Stargate: SG-1, Andromeda, Dead Like Me, Glory Days and Flash Gordon.

Salomaa’s features include starring in Black Eyed Dog (for which she wrote and performed its song), Firefight (for which she was nominated for a Leo Award for Best Lead Actress), the role of Athena in Odysseus and The Isle of the Mists, and she can be seen in the recent, highly anticipated film Watchmen.

Born in Sudbury, Ontario, Salomaa’s family moved to Salmon Arm, British Columbia when she was four. Salomaa studied Forestry at the University of Northern British Columbia in Prince George, working summers in the bush. During her last summer break, she went to Victoria where she sang and played guitar at open mic nights. While in Victoria, she took an acting workshop and, before it was over, she was being asked to audition for professional gigs. She now makes her home in Vancouver.
