Southeast Edmonton apartment fire causes $1.5M in damage

A fire in southeast Edmonton caused approximately $1.5 million in damage, Edmonton Fire Rescue Services said Wednesday.

Edmonton fire crews were called to the blaze at an apartment building in the city’s southeast Tuesday morning.

A spokesperson with Edmonton Fire Rescue Services said they received a call at 9:10 a.m. reporting flames and smoke coming from the roof of the multi-residential building.

The fire was brought under control at 10:23 a.m. and was extinguished by 12:23 p.m., EFRS said Wednesday.

Investigators say the fire started on a fourth floor balcony before spreading to the roof. It appears the fire was started by improperly discarded smoking material, EFRS said.

It’s estimated the fire caused $1 million in damage to the structure, while $500,000 in damage was caused to contents.
