Edmonton – The Edmonton Oilers have signed their 2013 first round draft pick to a three-year entry level contract.

Darnell Nurse was selected seventh overall in this year’s NHL draft.

The 18-year-old defenceman recorded 41 points and 116 penalty minutes in 68 games last season with the Ontario Hockey League’s Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds.

Nurse was named the OHL’s Scholastic Player of the Year for 2012-13, after carrying an 85% average in six Grade 12 University Prep courses.

The 6’5, 192-pound blueliner is the son of former CFL receiver Richard Nurse and nephew of former NFL quarterback Donovan McNabb.
