Winnipeg man, 25, in custody after armed Selkirk Avenue standoff

A four-hour long standoff unfolded in Winnipeg's North End Friday morning after police got a call about a man armed with a firearm who had threatened two women. Global's Joe Scarpelli reports – Jul 10, 2020

A Winnipeg man is in custody facing a number of weapons charges after an incident Friday morning saw a large police presence close a North End street.

Winnipeg police said they were investigating a weapons-related incident at a home on Selkirk Avenue and were called there at about 7:15 a.m.

Officers could be seen with their guns drawn in the area.

The area was taped off and media were being asked to stay back. Police used a megaphone to communicate with people inside the home, asking them to leave.

A reporter on the scene heard several shots fired, along with flash bangs.

At about 10:50 a.m., the police’s K9 unit stormed the home and a man was arrested.

In video posted to Facebook, a shirtless man wearing track pants is seen being led out of the house in handcuffs down the stairs.

Police said Friday afternoon that a 25-year-old man is in custody facing charges of weapon possession, two counts of pointing a firearm, four counts of possessing a firearm contrary to a prohibition order, failing to comply with a probation order, and four counts of failing to comply with release conditions.
