Manitoba Hydro said the fire happened at the station on York Avenue at about 11:40 p.m. Thursday.

Hydro spokesman Bruce Owen told 680 CJOB workers weren’t able to get into the station until around 4:30 a.m.

“When it’s a substation fire of that nature, you have to put on protective clothing and take all precautions possible,” he said.

“We have restored the majority of customers, however we still have 80 customers out in the downtown area.

“We’re working now to get the remaining customers back on but we don’t have an estimated time of restoration for that.

“One of the supervisors has told me it’ll be all hands on deck right now, because not only do we have to begin repairs at the substation, but we’ve also had to check all underground cables in the area for additional damage.”

Owen said the cause of the fire remains under investigation.
