Tornado-like phenomenon spotted near Belmont, Ont., moments before tornado warning issued

A possible tornado was caught on camera Wednesday night near Belmont, Ont.

Environment Canada issued a tornado warning for London and nearby areas just before 8:50 p.m. Wednesday, but announced the warning had ended seven minutes later.

Prior to the warning, Global News chief meteorologist Anthony Farnell posted a video on Twitter just after 8:30 p.m. of what appeared to be a tornado on the south side of Belmont, near London.

Environment Canada is also looking into reports of a possible tornado in the Glencoe area.

Peter Kimbell, a warning preparedness meteorologist with the national weather agency, said it’s too early to confirm whether they were actual tornadoes.

“It will take some time to look at them and determine for sure whether they were tornadoes or not,” said Kimbell. He notes there has to not only be rotation at the surface but connection with the cloud aloft.

A severe thunderstorm warning was posted by Environment Canada just before 6:30 p.m. Wednesday and lasted for three hours. It warned wind gusts of up to 110 km/h and torrential downpours were possible, along with nickel-size hail.

A heat warning, in effect for much of southwestern Ontario Tuesday and Wednesday, has ended.

Thursday is forecast to be a cloudy day with a high of 22 C and a low of 13 C.
