Quinte West OPP have a man in custody following a disturbance that led to the evacuation of a building in Frankford, Ont.
Police have given few details about the incident, other than it took place on Scott Avenue.
Neighbours in the building, a large home separated into apartment units, told Global News they began to hear a commotion on the lower floor of the building early in the morning.
“About 6:30 a.m. this morning my wife and I heard the sirens, and alarms going off. And she went out and looked down the street and all the police cars were coming,” Mike Finnigan, who lives just down the street, told Global News.
OPP said the canine unit, the emergency response team and a crisis negotiator were called in to deal with the situation.
A lower-floor window was smashed at some point during the morning, but it’s unclear by whom.
Residents of the building were told by police to evacuate at about 8 a.m. Around 10 a.m., Global News witnessed OPP escorting a man out of the building, who was yelling and struggling with police.
On Thursday, OPP said they charged a 24-year-old Trenton man with break and enter, mischief under $5,000, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose and criminal harassment.
Brent and Anabelle Berre live across the street from the building, and were told by police to stay inside and lock their doors. They said they’ve seen the same man in previous incidents with a woman they believe lives in one of the units.
“We just know there were a few incidents,” Anabelle said. “He had been knocking on the door, yelling threats and stuff to her inside, in the middle of the night.”
It’s unclear exactly what happened, but OPP said there was no immediate danger to the public.
