‘Red Card’ becomes a symbol of Egypt protests

As thousands of Egyptians flood Tahrir Square determined to oust Islamist President Mohamed Morsi many protesters can be seen waving red cards to demand the resignation of the Egyptian president.

Commonly used in soccer to indicate a player is being ejected for a serious offence, the card has become a symbol of the 2013 protests in Egypt that are marking the anniversary of Morsi’s presidency.

Many of the red cards being waved carry phrases like “Get Out” and “Morsi Out.”

The protests in Cairo have grown to their largest size since the 2011 revolution forced Hosani Mubarak from office.
